Biography

Maryam is a dedicated Microbiologist currently pursuing an MSc in Antimicrobial Resistance in the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom UK) with a clear focus on achieving goals, underpinned by a passion for advocating against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Her on-going professional journey is built upon a solid foundation of research knowledge, and extensive hands-on laboratory work in both the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries.

She is a public health enthusiast whose interest is fuelled by making a meaningful impact on the well-being of individuals and communities through her voluntary advocacy and research involvement with youth organizations. She is inherently self-motivated, always seeking opportunities to expand her skill set and thrive in dynamic environments. Her unwavering eagerness to learn serves not only her personal growth but also her commitment to fostering a positive and productive environment.

She continuously aspires with firm determination to develop both personally and professionally, holding the belief that self-improvement is a catalyst for achieving excellence.

Maryam’s Journey in AMR Advocacy

Maryam’s journey towards a career in addressing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) commenced during her undergraduate research. There, she delved into the investigation of seemingly innocuous fomites, such as hand railings, which concealed pathogenic bacteria and the ease with which these microbes could be transmitted to individuals. She also explored their susceptibility to antibiotics.

Fuelled by this infectious curiosity, Maryam eagerly applied for the Ducit Blue Foundation’s prestigious One-Health Pan-African AMR Internship/Mentorship program 2021/2022 cohort. Here, she was immersed in a rich educational landscape of AMR and one-health, gaining a solid foundation. Moreover, she connected with a dynamic network of like-minded youth hailing from diverse corners of Africa, sharing invaluable insights that enriched her perspective.

As she engaged with eminent experts and passionate peers from an array of disciplines, Maryam’s commitment to the battle against AMR deepened. Her unyielding drive ultimately led her to join the Africa Public Health Student Network Initiative (AfricaPHSN), where she plays a leading role in driving impactful youth advocacy initiatives. Maryam’s journey is not just a career path; it is a compelling narrative of dedication, discovery, and transformation.

Ongoing Projects

Maryam’s current academic journey is an inspiring one, as she diligently pursues an MSc in Antimicrobial Resistance at the renowned University of Sheffield in the UK. Her dedication to this pursuit is underscored by the unwavering support she receives from Ducit Blue Foundation, an organization that deeply cherishes her endeavours.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Maryam holds the crucial position of Head of Advocacy for AfricaPHSN. In this role, she takes on the pivotal responsibility of organizing, coordinating, and executing advocacy programs across a network of 10 affiliated African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Cameroon, Rwanda, Benin, and Zimbabwe.

Maryam’s contributions extend further to securing grants that bolster advocacy efforts for Public Health Days and nurturing collaboration within the public health advocacy sphere. She also excels in conceptualizing year-round advocacy strategies and meticulously managing budgets. Her tireless dedication and multifaceted contributions are making a significant impact in the field of public health.

Ducit Blue Foundation is so thrilled to share Maryam’s story. A journey that was solidified by her engagement in our One Health Pan African Internship/Mentorship Program. We are excited that Maryam is taking a step further by pursing a master’s in Antimicrobial Resistance at the prestigious University of Sheffield. Her pursuit serves as a profound source of motivation for our foundation, reaffirming our commitment to impacting the lives of African youth positively. In addition, we also wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to her mentor during the program, Dr. Olanike Buraimoh, whose invaluable guidance played a significant role in Maryam’s realization of her academic and professional aspirations.
