Towards Achieving Universal Health Coverage: Public-Private Partnership in Primary Healthcare.

When, in 2015, country leaders under the United Nations (UN) came together to agree on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) was one of the targets they set. Countries that progress towards UHC will make progress towards the other health-related targets, and towards the other goals. Universal health coverage (UHC) builds on the ‘Health for all’ Alma Ata declaration of 1978, which upheld health as a fundamental human right that must be ensured by all states and governments, with a goal to achieve an acceptable level of health coverage for everyone by the year 2000. The Alma Ata declaration proposed prioritisation of Primary Health Care (PHC) by all countries to achieve health for all.

Achieving the goals of UHC will require a sustainable system that accounts for the health of each person in the furthest and remotest living communities.
